I have an old computer with two hard drives - Lightning 540(500mb) and Maxtor MXT540SL SCSI(500mb).

If I want to get rid of the small drives, forget about the scsi and have one standard, say 40GB hard drive is it as straightforward as taking the hard drives out and removing the scsi card and then simply plugging in a new ide drive?

Also will there be any compatibility issues with any other hardware (motherboard)??

I appreciate any advice or recommendations of products.

Depends on what computer you have, the BIOS, and what onboard devices are installed.
It may be that you will hit the 2gb limitation in your attempt to upgrade. You may want to do a google search for hard drive limits to get a feel for the problems.
You have the best hard drive interface already installed, it just costs a little more to get SCSI drives.
