Hi folks, I had a 5 year old 6GB hard drive failing with various SMART warnings. It was suffering from intermittent bootup problems and funny noises etc. I replaced it with a new 80GB drive, but within a week I started getting the same symptoms! Is this a sign that it is something else other than the drives causing the errors?

I tried Active Smart and got these results, although I don't know if they are useful. In the original report spin Up Time and Temperature were in red.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter? Thanks!

It could be the drive going faulty, but I would try the hard drive in another machine with SMART turned on & see if you get the same problems. If you do, get the drive replaced under warranty. It could be the SMART detection that is at fault on your motherboard. Have you changed your IDE cable, as if that is faulty it could also cause problems.

Thanks for the reply, I will try a new cable first, then see about moving it to another machine.
