hi all,

We replaced a drive that failed on a Windows 2000 Server machine.

The bios recognizes the new drive but in Disk Management, the drive shows as "unallocated" rather than "Healthy".
The server has 2 drives - the OS is on the drive that didn't fail, so the server boots up fine.

What do we need to do so Windows will be able to use the new drive ? We dont need RAID protection on this one so is the next step to simply create a logical?

Thanks,
John

In Disk Management, right-click on the unallocated space, create your partition(s), then format it (them).

... hmmmm When I right-click on Unallocated, the Create Partition option is disabled. And the disk 'Type' is 'Unknown'.

What is my next step, please?

Thanks, John

I'm going from memory here as I don't have a 2000 system in front of me. I apologize as I think I missed the first step which is that you have to first initialize the disk then create the partitions as I described earlier. Right-click on the drive (not the unallocated space) and you should see an Initialize drive option.

Thanks Freestone,

First, I had to right-click --> Write Signature.

Then the 'Create Partition' option was enabled. I created a Basic partition and we're good to go.

Thanks, John

Thank you getting back to me. I was unsure if it was Initialize or Write Signature. Glad you got it going despite my rather hazy instructions.
