i replaced an Adaptec 2940 and put in an Adaptec 29160. when i booted it up it gave me the "insufficient termination detected on the .... connector"
the "..." is off the screen so i can't tell if it says "LVD/SE" or just "SE". I assume it's "SE" as I have an HP tape drive attached to the 50 pin internal SE connector. Then it will get to the Windows Server splash screen for about 8-10 seconds, then quickly flash to a blue screen of death (split second) then it reboots.
I don't use the tape drive, so I pulled out the tape drive. The error doesn't come up anymore, but it still reboots after a split second blue screen. I didn't change any jumpers or configuration, just swapped out the scsi card.
anyone have any tips to troubleshoot this?
thanks in advance.

my configuration: 4 scsi drives, 3 used in a RAID 5.
an internal scsi (50 pin) tape drive.

Do a repair install to replace the 2940 driver with the driver for the 29160 ( F6); download the driver from the Adaptec site. This should get Windows going again. The 29160, from memory will not do SE, so do not attach the tape unit for any reason

thanks technome-
i just tried installing the driver via a repair, no luck. again it gets to the windows server splash screen for a few seconds, then gives a quick blue screen, then reboots.
i noticed that when it lists the scsi devices it doesn't list the scsi card (which is id 7).

Perhaps there is a conflict with another card. I see this with NIC interface interfaces sometimes. In the bios try changing the interupt of the devices around. Jocky the SCSI card to different slots.

I worked for Adaptec for a short while some time ago... If you are using a SCSI hard drive as your boot device (you don't mention whether you are or not...), you need to make sure that you are loading the proper drivers at startup. The only way to RELIABLY do this is to reinstall the AHA2940, boot the machine (to establish a known good boot baseline), download the AHA29160 drivers and create your driver disk/folder. Still booting from the AHA2940, power down, install the AHA 29160 and reboot (still from the 2940). XP should auto detect the 29160 card; if not, install it now. Update the drivers if/as needed, power down again and attach the boot drive to the 29160 (you should be able to safely remove the 2940 at this point). Can you boot successfully now?

The 29160 works well with all of the NIC's I have seen, but it may have issues with other 29160 silicon (Adaptec onboard and LSI are the two major culprets). If you have onboard SCSI silicon, or are using another SCSI card which you are NOT booting from, turn off "int 13" support in the SCSI BIOS for the card.

There IS a 50 pin Ultra SCSI internal header on the card AHA29160, but as the 29160 is a single channel card, adding a tape device (or any other SE device) will slow the entire bus down.

You mention that you are getting an "insufficient termination" message. Are you populating the SCSI cable from the far side (next to the cable's terminator) in towards the card? If you have multiple devices attached, are you jumpering any of them for Termination Power (different from simple termination)? Is the cable you are using rated for U160 orU320? If not, replace the cable. If it is U160/320, is the cable terminated, or are you using a "point to point" cable?

If you are using an external drive enclosure of any type, please make sure that IT is properly terminated, and that it's firmware is up to date as well...

Keep us posted...

i booted the server with both cards installed, but the drives attached to the original card. then i shut it down and attached the drives to the new card and it booted up just fine.
thanks poppaman and technome.
