Hello.

I have an excel file that comes with strange characters: *.*
I would like to replace these characters by the number 0. I tried with the IF function but it did not work. I guess I did not use it right.

Thanks.

Now have *you* tried find and replace using those characters, as it'snot quite as straight-forward as your post would lead the OP to believe?

The problem you have is that Excel treats the asterisk as a wildcard, so you need to cater for that when you do a find and replace, and you need to precede the * with a tilde, eg

~*.*

Hi Ken,

that's right, except you need the tilde before each *. Like this:

~*.~*

Cheers, Glenn.

Did you hear about the literalist show-jumper? He broke his nose jumping against the clock.

oops - cheers Glenn. Tested it with dummy data and it worked fine, though I was assuming the *.* was at the end of the text, so it was going to work anyway with my data. Hadnt considered it might be elsewhere.
