I want to run a duplicate test on an archive containing many repeated directories, and when I find a duplicate file, I want to replace it with a shortcut so that I can preserve the integrity of the file structure, but massively reduce the amount of data

I don't know about making shortcuts, but there is a "Duplicate Finder" that comes with Windows 2000 Resource Kit that will list all duplicate filenames it comes across.

"In space, nobody can hear you click..."

If you could do this, and I don't think so, where would the shortcut point to?

First, use fsutil hardlink to create a new hardlink for the file.

Second, rename this instance of the file to a temporary name.

Third, use the replace /s command from a command session to replace the orginal filename with its new hardlink

Fourth, rename the file in step #2 to the original filename.
