Are there any rules governing the use of "we" im writing up some notes at the moment and im using it quite a fair bit. It is now getting to the point of annoying..

so, does anyone have any tips or pointers when using "we" and what else you can substitute ?

I thought any report (at least GCSE chemistry) was written in the third person. So we/i did this is not allowed. 'The ... was placed here' was how it was supposed to be written.

I have reached that devilmaycare stage where I say "I believe that" or "In my opinion" because I am confident of what I say and prepared to own up to it being my opinion, conclusion, advice or whatever.

I think that "We" should only be used if it really is the opinion, etc of a distinct group of people i.e. more than 2 people in which case "Fred and I believe that" is sufficient.

I don't agree with the "Royal We" concept but that's just me being an anti-monarchist.

As for writing in the third person, well I started out in the Civil Service 20+ years ago when everything was passive and indirect - the more active form seems to be required nowadays.

I have also seen a lot of "The Bleugh Group recommend" stuff in formal reports as if they were written by a soul less, anonymous entity rather than a person - thinks: of course they are.

I would just vary things enough so that you don't get bored or annoyed reading it. If you are getting annoyed with it the reader probably will be as well. You can substitute the type of group encompassed by 'we' (the company, the church, the organization, etc.) or use the actual proper name of the group (IBM, Defense Department) as variants.
