After a fresh install of Win2kpro I get windows has installed new a device do you want to reboot yes/no. There is no problems in device manager and no new devices were added. I have fixed this in win95/98 but do not know where to look in the registry in win2k. In 95/98 it was a run or run service command in hkey/localmachine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/. But the registry is not the same in w2kpro. I need to remove a message loop.

No answer here, just an extension to what you've already tried.
As it was a run thing last time, have you looked in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch - using the same subbranch values as you mention above. It's a duplicate of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE tree, but holds things only for the current logged in user whereas the local machine branch applies to all users.

Yes I did try looking there but there was no extra listing. in 9x windows it is easy to find. A coworker suggested looking in the policy editor ether group or user but I could not find it there. I could blow the system away and start over but that seems over kill! Guess wgat MS says they will help for any where from $49.00 to $200.00 depending on online help or phone heh:)
