When I add one group header on a report, let's say, a customer list group by state, if one state takes more than one page, I want the state to be print on the top of the next page of that group. I'm sorry, but I'm using the french version of FM. They call group header "Sous-récapitulatif par PROVINCE (en-tête)
In MS access, it's "Repeat Section". In Crystal Report, it's "Repeat Group Header on each page", in R&R, I don't remember, but it's a very simple task. In Visual Foxpro (2.6, 3,5,6,7,8,9.0) it's "Repeat group header one each page ...
First, FileMaker is not MS access, Crystal Report, Visual Foxpro, it's FileMaker and it is a database.
What you can try is playing with the header part.
The title header is only for the first page.
A field placed in the header part will show data from the first record on the given page.
Sometimes you will have to play with the position of fields, 1 pixel offset is sometimes enough to accomplish what you want.
Hey, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but, I'm a software developper, and I want to do a very simple task, done in other software. If I can't do it with Filemaker, well, it's Ok, I'll find other way. Now, I'll have to explain to my customer, who pay me for our work, that it's not possible to do.
If I give you example of other language, it's not that I want to tell you it's better in other languange. I only want to give you some insight of what I want to do. I always suppose that developpers in this forum don't use only one language (FM) to develop software or solutions. I'm looking for a simple solution here. It's a very simple question. I don't care if it's done in Access or Fox or COBOL or watever language existing. I just want to know if it's possible to print the group header on subsequent page. That's all.
Maybe I was a little crude, but I want this thing done very quickly.
I'm not very familiar with Filemaker and as any software geek, I want the job done quick and nice. I thank you for your time. I'll have to look foward on this feature.
Point is that many have the wrong habit to try same things out in 'other' programs and wonder why they can't do it.
Avoid thinking: Why can't I do the same.
Think more as: I need this outcome, how can I do it in this program ?. Is it possible, easy...
As a programmer I not only use FileMaker, although it is my core program.
I first look at what I need, then I look which program can 'give' me the best result.
Usually it's FileMaker, but sometimes it's another program.
I'm not stick to just one, I use them as a tool. And using the best tool to do the job is the first thing to look at....
Export the data to another program, do 'the thing' there and import back into FM is sometimes a solution.
Or just plain make the reports in another program...
Depend what the question is. I have several applications where the report part is made outside FileMaker and the result is shown in a containerfield....
So finally, after all, it's not possible to repeat group header on each page?
It's ok. My customers don’t want to use other development software than Filemaker. They're still using 6.0 and I’m working them to upgrade to 8.5 (very better ...)
Don't get me wrong. Filemaker is a great product, I'm learning, but, maybe, they'll go to Crystal to print these damn report (anyway I hate to make reports, so they’ll figure themselves).
Thanks’ again. I’ll have lot more questions, later.
