guys, what is the best way to add repeat tasks - I have a task with about 30 sub tasks and I need to repeat this around 20 times??

I would be grateful for any help.

Dave

Several possibilities including:

1. Using templates.
1a. Create a template (create a bare bones project schedule and click on file | save as... and select file type of template)
1b. Create an individual project for each occurrence and save the customized file as a project file.

This approach is particularly useful if the subsequent project file is maintained by someone other than yourself.

1c. When you want to see the overall view, create a master project and insert each of the individual projects.

1d. Big advantage is that you can identify where a task came from. Suppose you have a task "abc" in your template. When you insert all the individual projects you will see task "abc" many times. Display the column "Project" and you can see which task "abc" you're referring to.

2. Copy&Paste
2a. Create the tasks so that there is a single summary task under which all remaining summary and individual tasks can collapse (it's not mandatory to do it this way, but it's the easiest).
2b. Collapse everything.
2c. Click once on the row id.
2d. Hold the ctrl key down; click-and-drag the row id down so that you have a copy.

Advantage: fairly quick. Disadvantage: hard to tell which task "abc" you're referring to.

Assuming that your task groups will have different start dates you should create a single milestone task in your group (or template) and then use it as a predecessor for all the related tasks. That way you have to change one date (the milestone start date) and everything will automatically follow suit. Entering start dates and end dates (as opposed to letting Project calculate them based on predecessors, successors and durations).
