I'm in the processof renumbering a Legend system from the 5100 range to the 802x range. I was sucessful on my first few that I changed, but when I changed the last batch of extensions, I was that the system had went into "surregate" mode. My setup is:

Slots 1-3 408 GLM-U
Slot 4 016 TRR
Slot 5 012
Slot 6 408 GLM-U
Slot 7 100CSU-DSU
Slot 8 800DID

I checked to make sure I wouldn't be messing with any of the default extension ranges, but this has happened twice now. My best guess would be that the 800DID mod doesn't like what I'm doing. And I've looked for some explaination on surragate mode but haven't found any. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

800 range is not a good idea because the lines are numbered 801-880

Yeah, I know that now!! After going back in and reading the dialplan again, I saw the error of my ways!! There really isn't any openings beacause this system sits behind a Definity, and everything else you could use is already being used. I hope someelse has a idea for me. Thanks for your help.

How about renumbering your trunks to 4 digit, for example 8101 thru 8180. This would free up your 80xx bank.

By the way, 'surrogate mode' allows you to program equipment that doesn't exist. For instance, if you wanted to program a new switch, but all you had was the processor, you could 'tell' the switch which type of card is going to be in which slot and then proceed to program the ports. You have to make sure, though, that the card you program matches the card you actually install. Surrogate mode can cause some unusual (and sometimes irreparable harm), so use it cautiously.

Thanks for your reply Franke. I'll suggest that to the customer. Could you possibly tell me where I can find info on this surrogate mode? I've looked but can't seem to find anything on it in the manuals. As I said in my first post, I didn't put the switch in surrogate mode it went into that mode after I did the renumbering. I think that renumbering the lines might do the trick though. Thanks again for your help.

Surrogate mode is automatically entered into if you connect directly to the system through the RS-232 port with only the power supply and processor card present.

Once you are connected this way you:

1) Perform a System Erase.
2) Program the modules accordingly.
3) Perform a backup to a floppy disk.

Then you can restore the backup once the modules are in place. This meant more for programming a system from planning forms offsite and then just coming in with a floppy disk to dump in the job.

One other piece of advice. The System Manager's Quick Reference and the Pocket Reference are invaluable aids for seeing programming constraints, default system numbering, system capacities, etc. I would recommend visiting the Avaya Support site ( and downloading all of them before attempting a major project.

Hope this helps!

Tahnks guys, all of your tips have been helpful. Still one more question: When I do a system inventory, it shows the 800DID card as being in surrogate mode. Why does it show it in that mode? As I said before, this sits behind a Definity and two are connected with a T1 circuit.

You might try printing the 'dialplan' and verify there are no numbering conflicts, if there is, correct them. Then try a board renumber.
