renumber word headings

Word 2003/xp I have a long doc in which the chapters are numbered consequetively as normal. My appendix which is the last chapter takes the next number in the chapter sequence which I don't want. I just want heading 1 for the appendix to say appendix not chapter 9 appendix. Similarly for the subheadings so that heading 2 would read appendix a.1. When I select the appendix and go to bullets and numberings> customise> more the option to apply it only to the section is greyed out. So first question is what do I do?

Second question: the figures and tables are also labled fig 9.1 etc. How do I change that to read fig app 1

Hi keithinoz,

If you've still got enough unused heading levels left, you could simply re-format some of the lower-level ones with the same appearance as the higher ones, except for the details that you want to appear different (eg no Chapter #). Of course, you'll also need to make sure your TOC picks up the new levels correctly.

I've found that if you just tab left from the name, you can lose the number and still have the name in the headings, and also the Table of Contents.

You could just create a new style called "appendices" or the like, make sure it is based on "no style".
Then you can alter its numbering resp. outline in any fashion without impeding your heading numbering.
