So has anyone experienced slow rendering due to massive files in illustrator?

I currently have a project that has a lot going on in the art, all Vector with clipping masks and the like that need to be copied and pasted and moved to new locations. Only its like illustrator is taking forever to load a specific effect that has been added to the art i.e. the clipping masks and gaussian blurs.

does this sound like a Ram related issue? Or is there something else that i need to do? Any info would be greatly helpful.

I am running a G5 desktop with 2x2.66GHz Dual Core
For memory i have a 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Thanks again guys!

This highlights my concern with illustrator and how people can even design medium to large scale projects efficiently.
Eastbayrk, look at the minimum system requirements for illustrator cs3 then compare to yours!!:

PPCG4, osx10.4.8, 512mb RAM (1gb recommended), 2.5gb HD space, 16bit video card.

What video card are you running?

Will making symbols of recurring elements help?

Does viewing in outlines speed up the display?

Is this a new problem?

These programs are feeling as bloated as certain game engines. I cant help thinking its unrefined bloat code to hit release deadlines.

Viewing in outlines does not help. This is a new problem in our offices because we are doing high end printing with to size files. So with the amount of effects added, they are large effects.

We just added ram to one of the computers (Ram from the other to this one)

Because the art has clipping masks and gausian blurs the program has to convert to raster to make that effect along with recalculating the vector points. Is there a way to adjust for the raster conversion?

What version of AI are you using. You should do better using a version earlier that CS3 on a G5 or earlier. If using CS3, max the ram.

Rendering is probably the biggest single hog on any machine. That's why animation studios have entire render farms. It can be pretty slow.

To see how your machine is coping go to Go menu/utilities and open Activity monitor. click on the Memory button and do a render. See how much ram is being used. What you want to avoid as much as possible is hitting Virtual memory on your hard drive as this really slows things down. If you're running out of ram during rendering add more, a lot more.

Also look at CPU to see how much is being used in the render. There's not much you can do about stressing this other than quitting apps. If you quit other apps and the cpu is still hitting its max, then be prepared to wait for renders.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4 & G5
