Renaming Server

I need to rename the Windows 2000 Server name that my SMS Server is installed on. I'm not renaming the site code or changing any SMS configuration settings.
I've tried this and SQL gives an error message when the server is booting, saying that SQL is corrupt or been tampered with and i need to re-install. Also, when trying to open the SMS Console, it tries to connect to the old server name.
Any ideas ??

Keith no easy answer here. We have run through many tests in our lab and have NEVER been able to rename a server without a full reinstall of SQL and SMS.
We have also had little success simply moving a server from DomainA to DomainB.

Hopefully you have a good backup handy.
