I don't know how this happened, but I had backed up my important folders on a D Partition before replacing Windows ME with Windows 98. ( I know, probably should have gone to XP). After a fresh 98 OS, I restored the files on D to folders on C, and noticed that after each file extension was a "_" and then a 10 digit number. My question is,
Is there a DOS rename syntax, or a way I could remove the "_xxxxxxxxxx" from the many files that were renamed?

Thanks

If they all have the same extension, you should be able to rename using a wildcard.

Form a dos prompt in the directory where the files are, and having carefully backed them up (of course!), try someting like

ren *._* *.doc

(space between _* and *.)

Assuming the desired extension is .doc

Here is what I use for renaming (forget the old-fashioned slow dos-renaming system).

Quick File Rename v2.01

This program is so excellent, and it's free.

Hey, there is probably a newer version by now, but this
is SO FAST, and SO easy to use,,,,,, it would take
2 - minutes to rename them all.

You just use the "advanced" command an can change anything you want in a file,,,,,, or AS MANY files as you want.
Drag & drop.

Super easy, super fast.
