$$rename.txt not working

As part of an unattended installation I am installing the novell client. There is a folder c:\nov\rm that contains 6 files, e.g blankscreen.sys that get copied as 8.3 files e.g blanks~1.sys. I have tried using $$rename.txt but it doesn't seem to work. I must have the syntax wrong. Can somebody help.
