We are moving our SQL 2000 databases to a new server. We want to get started installing SQL and Great Plains, and then create Dynamics and the company databases.

On Friday after everyone is done, I will backup all the databases and restore them into the new databases on the new server.

At what point can I/do I need to rename the new server to the name on the old server?

Thanks!
Barb E.

You don't need to rename the new server with the old server's name. There is nothing in the GP code that looks at the server name. The only thing it uses is the ODBC connection, which will be pointed to the new server. The server name is stored within the master database. I am assuming you are just restoring the GP databases and not the master? If you are also restoring the master db, you can verify what the server name is by running this:

select @@SERVERNAME

In sql 2000, it should keep the servername as the computer name automatically.

We have to rename the server because we have other databases on the server, and we have alot of workstations and programs with ODBC connections to this server. It would be easier to change the servername, than to go and change all the programs.

So I guess this can be done anytime as it doesn't affect Great Plains at all? I took a look at the SQL server admin forum but could not find anything specific.

Thanks!

wasn't there some problem with renaming a server that had sql installed on it?

Didn't you have a problem like that before luvsql?

and they wonder why they call it Great Pains!

There was an issue with sql 7 that was a pain. SQL 2000 is fine. The only thing GP has issues with is if your computer name and sql server name are different (can verify with the @@SERVERNAME script).

Thanks ppl! Wish me luck.

Thanks!
