Rename file extension to 004 hanges XP

Renaming ext. to file.001. file.002, file.003 file.005 file.006 are all OK.

Rename ext to 004 and windows explorer hangs for 2 minutes. Same result using Renaming software.

Is there some log file I can view to see whats causing the hangup?

What kind of files are you renaming? Do you have any association for that extension? Are you really really sure the problem is the 004?

Sounds like Master Splitter to me, but that IS odd.

Safe Mode - can you rename??

IF not
Command prompt: attrib -s -h -a c:\path\filename
try to rename

Boot to BartPE CD - try to rename. Almost guaranteed that this will work.
