Rename Field Names in a list

Is there anyway to rename the field names in a list on sharepoint

I dont mean the name that appears on teh screen but rather the name that SP assigns.

For example

I Have a field called Dept Code

Sharepoint has made that Dept%5Fx0020%5Code

Which whilst in XML i can get aruond using

<Field Name='Dept_x0020_Code'

I would rather rename the fields, also i have a field with a / and i cant for the life of me get that to work
