My neighbor and I both have wireless networks and we foolishly both called them "home". Also both are open access. So what is happening is that sometimes they are connecting to our network, and vice-versa.

Q1: How do I rename my wireless network so this cannot happen?

Q2: How do I make my network private or password protected?

Any help appreciated.

You'll either be using an AP (Access Point) or a Router for providing your wireless network. Usually these devices can be accessed via your web browser by typing in the relevant IP Address. (Quite often 192.168.1.1). You may have a username and password to negotiate before you get "inside" the AP or Router. Once inside, there will be a section headed Wireless, and SSID. It is the SSID you need to change to HOME-2 or whatever. You should then look for the security settings, and choose whatever is appropriate. Whatever code you put in, you will need to input this for your computer to gain access to your network. Your neighbour should also invoke some security on his wireless network to avoid anyone else getting in, either accidentally or deliberately.

How do I get the username and password? I don't remember ever setting one up. If it was done the I am sure the cable people did it not me. Can I delete my network and start over?

Router or Access Point...? Make and model might help us advise you better.

As a general rule of thumb, many people don't bother to change from the defaults, so you might find this:-

User Name: admin
Password: password or admin or even just a blank!

Yes, you can reset it back to manufacturer's defaults. There is usually a small reset button on the back of the unit - may be recessed, so use a straightened out paperclip or similar. If it's a Router, be aware that you will need to know your Broadband (ADSL) logon Username and Password, which will be different to the username and password to get into the unit. You may also have to put in some parameters for correctly setting up your router. If we know who is providing your Broadband service, then the forum may be able to advise what's required. Or you might find it on the relevant service provider's website.

Router. The provider is mediacom.

If you have no idea on username and password and my suggestions didn't work, then call Mediacom if they are the people who set it up for you. I'm assuming you've got a cable connection rather than ADSL over a phone line...

Did they provide the router as well? They should know all these details if they set it up for you...

Have you tried getting into the router using your browser?

Cable. I bought the router but they did the work. Yes, I used Firefox to get where I am so far.

Have you tried accessing the router using Firefox?

Although Mediacom is not listed (probably re-branding another mfr's router) there is a good list of default passwords and usernames here.

Sorry.

I would try "admin" with a blank password, or a blank username and "admin" as the password, or "admin" as the username and "mediacon" as the password.

Go through the above list, try everything! [smile]

What brand of router did you use or did you get a modem router combo from the ISP?
