I have a win2k domain that has its schema upgraded to accept a win2k3 dc and exchange 2k3 servers.
In this domain, one of my win2k servers is a dc/dns(integrated)/dhcp and the 2nd dc is the same but a secondary.

All dns is ad integrated. My new dc that I want to be ( for lack of a better term) primary, or replacement, is win2k3 with dns integration.

1. I want to move dhcp to this new win2k3 dc.

2. My old win2k dc with dhcp and integrated dns I need to remove and decommition.

I know for #2 I can do a dcpromo and remove it that way then join the server to a workgroup and life is good and clean.

#1 might be an issue.

Is there any learning experiences that you guys could share?

Thanks

How to move a DHCP database from a computer that is running Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 to a computer that is running Windows Server 2003;

THanks Paul,

I guess I'm reading a bit more trouble into this than is needed.

Since I have dns integration in to AD, all I have to do to remove the older dns server via dcpromo and I'm good?

Are you planning on bringing up a new DC? Do you need a dns server to provide results for queries for clients?

If you really dont need dns when you dcpromo it gets rid of the AD partitions (forest, domain) that contain specific entries for the zones that are AD Integrated, I am 90% sure DNS will still be an installed component however, so you may need to uninstall that.

Just keep in mind if you are providing dns service to down level clients they will not be able to resolve queries if this is their primary dns server.

Cory,

I've already expanded the schema, introduced the new win2k3 dc, transfered FSMO rolls and made it a GC.

I want to get the dhcp service running on it ( which doesnt seem to be a big deal ) and it looks like integrated dns has taken over on this new dc.

I just don't what my domain to collapse when I take down this old win2k dc that jsut has dns fucntionality on it.

My clients have it listed as a secondary dns in dns settings. WHen dhcp gets moved over, that will be fixed. Then I just have a small handfull of servers to change the dns settings for the secondary server.
