Removing old computers

I've been rebuilding a lot of computers on the domain. I noticed that their old names are still listed in AD Computers... is there anyway I can get it to update and remove the old computer names?

You could use vbscript to attempt to conect to the PC and if it is non-responsive delete the account.

Alternatively, you can use the "dsquery" tool to query Active Directory for computer accounts inactive for 'n' days and delete them manually.

This tool is a part of Windows Server 2003 admin pack and can be installed on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Pro machines only.

Or a combination of the two, use dsquery to dump the inactive machines to a text file and use that with vbscript to delete the accounts.

As this is a windows 2000 forem and my DC's are in 2000 mode... will the dsquery still work?

dsquery" can be run against both Windows 2000 Servers and Windows Server 2003 Servers. As I mentioned earlier, this tool is a part of Windows Server 2003 Admin Pack and can be installed only on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional (not on Windows 2000 machines).
