removing news date/writer's name

Whenever I add a news item in our sharepoint portal the title, date, description, and author shows up on the public forum of the portal.

Would anyone be able to tell me how to remove/hide the date and author's name for the news item that I put in?

you can edit that stuff in frontpage. there's an article at microsoft on how to create anonymous discussion boards i believe that could help you.

I believe it's a sharepoint webpart which I can't edit. Can you/some1 point me to the right direction?

try opening the page up in frontpage, right clicking the webpart and convert to xslt data view. you should be able to edit it that way.
