How do I remove the annoying icons in the lower right section of the main screen that are located by the time and volume icon. Do I go into control panel or do I remove in reg edit?

You can Start > Run > msconfig

and in the "Startup" tab turn off the program you don't want running resident in memory.

This doesn't cover all the prograns you see in the "pallet" section of the "Task bar" but most of them.

Icons like the sound speaker can be turned off in the control panel.

You can right click some pallet icons and click exit or stop, but they will re-appear at next re-boot.

It's called the "tray". First used the above method. Then if you want to live dangerously:
Click Start>Run>Regedit
Goto HKey_Local_Machine\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run then delete the program description you don't want to run at startup.

Warning: playing with the registry is nuts.

If you do choose editing the registry you might want to back it up first.

While in regedit: Registry > Export > pick a place to store it.

If you destroy your registry, you can restore it to where it was. Registry > Import > ...

Depending on the program, you should be able to go into the settings of the specific program that the icon is for, and either turn off the system tray icon or have it not start on start-up. That is the safest way to do it. If you still have specific icons there still, then you should try msconfig and regedit methods listed above.
