Removing Contraints Not Working

Hopine someone can help me on this. I am using Project Professional 2003. I have been given a project that has already been created by someone else. Unfortunately they typed in there start dates creating constraints. I need to remove these in order to fix the project. I follow the directions in the help file.

1. click on the name column.
2. open the task dialogue
3. select the advance tab.
4. change the constraint type to As Soon As Possible.

Now, I should be able to increase the duration of a task without any problems. Instead a message box pops up telling me that the task or one it's linked to has a constraint. What gives? I removed them all. How could this be?

As an experiment. I cut and paste the offending tasks into a new worksheet and I don't get the message when I increase the same task's duration.

Is this a bug with Project 2003?

It's not clear to me that you have removed the constraints on every task.

1. View | Gantt
2. Insert the column "type"
3. Confirm that every detail task has "As Soon As Possible" as the type and change those that aren't.

In addition, once you have recorded some Actual work against a task you can't move the start so if you're trying to move a task that is a predecessor to another task that already has Actual work then you may not be able to make the change you want.

You might have assigned a resource to the task and that resource has a calendar that prevents you from modifying the task.

Be aware, too, that tasks can have their own calendars and this, too, might be constraining the task.

In short, there are more than a dozen different ways that tasks can be constrained.

The chance that this behaviour is a bug in Project is infinitessimally small.
