Can commited fixes, ptfs, etc. be removed?

Thank you.

Removing installed software will remove the complete fileset, however, what you are wanting is under the same smit panel, Software Maintenance and Utilities, but Reject Applied Software updates.

Unfortunately, you cannot remove committed fixes, only applied fixes can be removed. The only option is to install the base level and use the force overwrite option and then apply any updates.

It is best not to commit changes until a period of time has passed when you know it is safe to do that, otherwise just apply them.

Guess it depends on what you are trying to remove. Some committed file sets
yes, some no. Base operating system filesets that are required...no........

Committing a software update removes the previous version of the product from the
system to conserve disk space. Once a software product or update has been
committed, it cannot be deleted from the system except by removing the entire
software product (the base level product and all of its updates) or by
force-installing it back to a previous level. You must have the base level
of the fileset available on media in order to do a force-install.

Always do a mksysb before you try to screw with it.....just in case you corrupt something and have to go back.

littlejohnny,

This probably won't help you this time around, but here's a safe way to do it that allows you to undo:

When I install a fix or ML package, I select no for "Commit software updates?" and just as important yes to "Save replaced files?". That way, if something goes wrong, I can back out of the changes. Just applying the changes does make the changes, but allows you to back out of them at a later date.

Here's how to back out of the changes: in smit maintain_software: select the Reject Applied Software Update option and select what you want to reject.

If all goes well, before I apply another ML, I commit the previous ML. Using the same smit maintain_software command: select Commit Applied Software Updates (Remove Saved Files). You can either commit all of the updates, or click List and select the ones you want to commit.

Thanks everybody for your advice, which I will follow "next time". I should have known
aix maintenance is done just like os/390 and z/0s.

Hi

You can also install a Fileset with the Force Falg, to go on Level back.
In smitty install --Overwrite same or newer Version.

Your Level: balabal.4.3.3.75
install with Force balabla.4.3.3.50

Look at the Prerequisites and dependencies.
