well, it looks like I'm going to have to do this the hard way. The previous SA took the old exchange server off the network and left the reminance in ESM.

I am having trouble getting it removed.

Can anyone offer assistance or ideas? When I try to right-click the old non-present sever in ESM under Servers, its unresponsive...prob because the server isnt on the network anywhere.

thanks

Hi Mlchris2

I would go through this entire article below to cover all of you bases. My guess if the server is already gone from the network a few of these tasks may cause an issue, but it may identify if there is anything the previous guy did not do properly.

See how this goes and go from there.

Good luck

thanks, I will check it out and report back.

I checked the link that was provided and it would probably be useful if the server was present on the network, but its not... the old SA removed the server before removing exchange...

any other ideas?

I have a custer that has this same issue at the moment. I will not be able to look at this until he returns from a 7 week european trip. If / when i have a chance to resolve this i will put the info here.

I have just recently had an issue at another customer's site where i had to do the below:

You may need to use the ADSIEDIT part to remove the server from Active Directory. This may be an option but make sure you know what you are doing.

Andreh,

have you made any progress on this? I'm still trying to battle this

Mark C.

I started using ASDI Edit and i found some entries in containers that point to the old Exchange Server (that no longer exsists on the network)...

is it safe that I make some sort of backup....
delete all entries to this server...
restart all DC and Exchange servers....

any suggestions?

Mark

Sorry for lack of reply,

It sounds like a bit of a mess. If you want to start again, i would perform the remove exchange manually option. This will clean out all of the bad stuff. Then reinstall.

Of coarse, i would export all mail and re-import it again.

I don't know much about your site as this may be a serious amount of work

I don't see why it would be unresponsive, as it should be getting that info from AD. Typically you can right click on it and DELETE SERVER.

update for you all.

I removed the Server entry in Active Directory Sites and Services-Sites-Default-First-Site-Name-Servers

I restarted the Exchange server

Using ESM, I was able to get "right-click" options from the old Exchange server. I was able to remove the server from ESM and all of Active Directory.

things look good now.

thanks all!!!

Well done Mark. That sounds like a smart way around it. A good thing you didn't listen to my advice lol.

Goodluck
