I had installed a network card on a WIN98 destop PC. This worked 'ok' and was useful for a time. I have now moved on to a WIN XP desktop and WIN XP notebook using a LINKSYS wireless connection as a network. The problem now is that the old WIN98 machine doesnt work too well now that the network card is no longer in place as the machine still 'thinks' it is part of a network. Can anyone tell me how to restablish the WIN98 back to being a bog standard stand-alone desktop machine so my kids can use it?

Remove the network card from device manager. You may also need to go into network properties and set the default logon to windows. I don't remember this too well as it has been a while since I've done it.

Been there done that.

The machine still takes ages to boot now. I believe it is still looking for network stuff.

Are there any other steps that I've missed?

Time for a bootlog boot. And look to see what is consuming time.
