I am going through some testing and I have a Win2k8r2 server core installed. I used dcpromo to make it a domain controller and now I want to demote it. I used the command "dcpromo /unattend /AdministratorPassword:password but I get an error:

The Opperation failed becuase:
Acitve Directory Doamin Services coule not transfer the remaining data in directory partition CN=....

"The RPC server is unavailable"
ADDS was not removed.

RPC is running on both servers, First server was win2k8r2 Full install and was the first DC.

You need to create an answer file to run your dcpromo. Since this is the only DC, it is also the last DC in the domain. There are special options that you will need to select to remove the DC functionality from the machine.

The DC on the server core is not the only DC. It was the second DC. The First DC was instaleld on win2k8 Full install. Seems like they are not communicating correctly but I might be wrong.

Check and see if they are communicating correctly. Run DCDIAG, REPLMON, NETDIAG, etc.

I'm assuming that when you say that it isn't the only DC you mean that both DCs are in the same domain?
