We have recently changed network setup which means that the location specified in tools, templates and add ins no longer exists.
This is causing loads of problems when the user is opening a file which wants to read the old template.
I've found the way to remove the pointer once the document is open, but often the files will not open.
Is there a way to stop word looking for template updates, this would at least allow for the file to be opened and the pointer removed.
Ideally would be a tool which can scan the docs and remove them all.... I can dream!

Could you explain a little more. I take it that you have files that use templates, and now the templates are in a different location?

How many are you talking about?

Obne solution is a VBA procedures (in normal.dot) that uses the Document_Open event. Have it check fikles for the existing .AttachedTemplate property, and if incorrect, reassign the proper location. You can loop through all existing files.

The bummer part is if you have files scattered all over. The other bummer part is that you have to open the file (briefly) to reset the .AttachedTemplate property of each file.

The user had a few templates, like fax.dot and memo.dot.

They are addressed in the templates and add ins box as

\\server1\user\templates\fax.dot

\\server1 no longer is used, so we need to point it to the location of the new templates i.e.
\\newserver\user\templates\fax.dot

Server1 used to be in an NT domain, the new server is a Novell box.

Probably 20-30 docs for this one user, but im sure there will be more people come across this error.

All the files are in folders within a folder called word in this case, so if the VBA procedure you mention can see into sub directories then that could do it.
