I am working on a BCM50 with a BES50GE switch and 1140e IP phones. After a level 1 reset (and using a backup file to restore) 1/2 of the phones won't boot completely but give "server unreachable" I can see them, as devices via my router, the BES50 and the BCM50 show them under the DHCP leases but the IP addresses are outside of the DHCP range.

BCM50 is doing DHCP for everything

I can ping all of them as well but 1/2 of them still won't get past "server unreachable.

I've tried waiting for the Nortel screen and pressing the 4 buttons from left to right but the phone just continues its normal boot.
I've tried holding the up key and the 2 key during power-up but "DHCP starting" comes on the screen and if I continue to hold the keys the MW light will come on and go off, come on and go off. If I release them after the MW light goes off, the phone continues the normal boot cycle.

HELP!!!!!!!!! I need to change the configuration on these phones so they will work.

Try doing the 4 button sequence as soon as you hear the Nortel "song" right before the Nortel Logo appears.

Awesome! These phones can be a bit finnicky and highly technical, but I've learned these tricks through trial and error and not without some frustration on my part, haha. Glad I could help!

No kidding, I was tempted to go out to my van and grab my BFH (Big Hammer) and solve the problem once and for all. I'm already bald so I don't have any hair to pull out so I was working on the gray. LOL!

Honestly, when it doesn't work the way the documentation explains it should work, it's up to techs to let each other know the work arounds. I've found my fair share that I will share with anyone.

I felt the same way. These phones blow the Cisco ones out of the water functionality, design and styling wise, but they are like princesses, just one little detail incorrect, and they throw back a temper tantrum in the form of the "server unreachable" message, haha.

Check out the post I just left about the ringtones, it really bothers me that the BCM 1140E phones do not have the 8 ring tones/call buzz that all other Nortel platforms use. Little detail, but the ring tone is probably the most common element that users face day to day, so why skimp on it?
