Remove MS Installer?

Does any one know a good way to get rid of the Microsoft Installer? I have a corrupted install and I've tried running the update to the latest version but it gives me an error that it can't access the service. I'm at a point where the best solution would seem to be to uninstall and reinstall it. I checked the MS knowledge base and couldn't find anything useful.

Any Ideas?

do you know what service it's talking about?
are there any errors in eventlog about services not starting?
