OK so the backplane failed on one of my DC's, the server is old and is getting junked. I have removed it from AD using NTDSUTIL successfully.

I have another ready to go in its place and would prefer to keep the name the same as the one that failed - is this ok? When i deleted the failed DC it said successful but the server must remain off-line or the object will be recreated. So does this mean if I add it in with the same name it will cause problems or will it be ok because the servers SID is different?

or do I take the easy option and call it "5" so i have 1,2,3,5 (number 4 failed)

Thanks!

You have answered your own question.
As long as you are absolutely confident that the NTDSUTIL routine worked correctly then you can re-use the name.

thanks - BUT it said if I put the server back in it will re-activate the objects. My concern is that by using the same name it will believe its the same server and assign all funked AD objects to the new server.

I don't actually think it would be that rubbish and it will use the SIDs not the name, but being all DNS based it makes me wonder...

If you have removed the server from the metadata using ntdsutil then you can put a server back in with the same name again. I would ensure that the server object is gone from the domain controllers OU, probably clean up any old dns records for it, ensure the server object is gone from AD sites and services, review your event logs to ensure that there are no AD errors relating to the old box and then build the new box as 4 and add back in as a DC.

Did the box that failed hold any FSMO roles?? Just be sure that if it did you have seized those roles to another server now.

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Yes the FSMO roles weren't on that controller so was ok.

It seemed to go in ok using the old name (although new build)

It did have a few errors that seemed related but all is good at the moment!

found a great tool if anyones interested called replmon.exe this tool should be part of the standard server install!!
