Hi all,

I have question about remove the record of domain controller in AD. My case is as follows:

I have domain which have three domain controller (said A & C is windows 2000 server, B is NT 4.0 server) in AD. I found that domain controller B cannot run due to hardware error. Now, I cannot cancel the record of domain controller B in AD because I did not use command to downgrade it.

How can I remove the record of this DC in AD?

On the other hand, I want to build the new domain controller B with windows 2000 server and the same computer name as before. If the previous record in AD did not remove, can I add this new Domain controller B to this domain?

Thanks,

Do a metadata cleanup

If the previous record in AD did not remove, can I add this new Domain controller B to this domain?

NO, that would only work if it was a member server

Hi GrimR,

"If the previous record in AD did not remove, can I add this new Domain controller B to this domain?

NO, that would only work if it was a member server "

what is the meaning of member server?

member server has the same role as a standard PC.

i setup the test environment as follows:

I setup domain with windows 2000 server w/ SP4. Then, I add one more DC (says srv_B) into this domain. Then, I reinstall srv_B with same PC name and same OS and same hardware before. At this moment, this DC record is still in the domain.

Then, I add the new srv_B into this domain again. It can add to domain successfully.

I don't know why it can be added to domain when this DC record stay in AD before???
