My boss has asked me to head up a project that involves the removal of WINS from our Windows 2003 Domain. I was wondering if anyone has done this sucessfully and if so how did you do it.

I was thinking of removing it from our DHCP server parameters, followed by the removal from all static address and then removal of the actuall WINS servers.

Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you have multiple subnets? Are you going to register all computers in DNS for name resolution?

Also, some Exchange 2003 services, and probably other services that I may not be aware of are still dependent on WINS - even though Microsoft has promised that WINS is going away since 2000.

Your method for removal sounds good to me, provided you have no dependent services and you have another option for name resolution.

Hi!
I would suggest to begin with stopping/disabling the WINS service for a week or two. Your boss might not like the result and ask you to keep WINS.
otherwise your plan is good.
BTW you can find helpfull the following article "WINS is a Friend of Mine ":

Take a look at it, show it to your boss and he might decide that you need WINS.

When you disable wins, make sure there are no lmhosts files being used. They will act like dummy wins bases. Good luck.
