After testing various linux editions I use partition magic 7 to format, remove and merge the former linux partition with the win xp (ntfs). This issue occurs with the latest Mandrake edition. While Partition magic formats and removes te linux at the merging procedures gives an error message and freezes. When i reboot the computer it cannot to boot to any OS. Using a dos boot disk i go to a: but when i prompt it c: it says that c: is not there... however fdisk sees it there...

can you please tell me how can i remove the linux partition without losing the windows partition? Since know all i ca do is clear the disk with fdisk and and resize and format to win format.

I think your problem with XP lies with a file called boot.ini. This is used by XP to execute startup. The MBR points to this file. It appears that your MBR could also be at fault.

As you cannot get to your XP, try "fdisk /MBR". you have nothing more to lose. My Partition magic doesn't seem to handle NTFS volumes well either, and returns a partition error when trying to view a disk with both NTFS and EXT3 partitions.

I hope the above command helps you.
