Is there any way to have an icon put on my desktop when a device/drive "mounts" in windows 2000? Say for example, I plug in my usb keychain, it would automatically put an icon on the desktop for the device?
You can do that in 2000, but that will just create a shortcut. The shortcut will always be there. I want it to automatically show up when the drive is connected and not show up whent he drive isn't connected.
seriously though....make sure you have all Windows Updates (the USB 2.0 spec wasn't even entirely done for XP's release), and usually a Systray Icon will show up for all removable drives.....does yours?

Yes, I do want a Macintosh, but that's another subject.
I have all the windows updates, and it does put the removable drive icon in the system tray, but that doesn't allow me to access the drive. I guess I'll just have to use a static shortcut.
I really want it to be like the mac and show up when its plugged in and not show up when its not plugged in but I guess I'm just dreaming.
You seem to like a nice neat orderly Desktop....did you know that you can hide all Desktop Icons when "Viewed as a web Page"....?
OR
You can Right click the blank Taskbar area and select "New" >> Toolbar >> and Browse to the C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP or similar in 2K /XP and create an Expanding Desktop Folder by clicking on the (>>) that will appear with your mouse.....and this will have all your Desktop Icons..shortcuts and all

Yeah, I always "try" to keep a nice orderly desktop. I say try because my desktop usually ends up being my "workspace" for things that I'm currently working on and as a result gets frequently cluttered.
I did know about both of the things you suggested. I still want to be able to view my icons. I have my "Quick Launch" toolbar partially hidden and put my shortcuts there instead of my desktop for the most part.
Trust me, if you can suggest it, chances are I know about it. I'm not trying to sound egotistical, but I do tech support for a living and I'm always customizing my desktop so I've tried everything. It just frustrates me that I can't do this one thing. It seems like I used to have a windows 95 machine that did this, but that could have been a bug!
Well, I can live with just creating a static shortcut if I must, although since it's a removable drive, windows may not always assign it the same drive letter. This wouldn't be an issue but I have a large number of mapped drives (work computer).
Ok wharp;
I never had to deal with the issue before, as for me it's a non-issue cause I just always Open my Explorer icon and I access any and all drives....but that's ok....everyone's tastes are diff.
Happy computing
