REMOTE_USER variable not showing

I use iis on Windows 2000 server. Each time i uncheck the allow anonymous logon on the iis propoerty setting, the web pages will refuse to show or come up. However, when i check it it come out fine but then i wont be able to capture the remote_user server variable that tells me who logged on to the window from which my site was invoked. pls what do i do. Any suggestion
