When users reside locally they get the message your password will expire in x days fine. For our remote users they never get these messages. Then one day they cannot get in at all. Any ideas why and how to fix it? We are using Cisco VPN clients for remote access.

There's a setting in the Cisco client to logon to the VPN first, before logging onto the computer. Turn that feature on so that your remote users are on the VPN first before they logon to their systems. That way when they logon they're logging onto the domain directly instead of in cached mode and they'll get the notification to change their password.

In the Client, Options - Windows Logon Properties - Enable start before logon
