Remote SoftConsole without VPN

I think i already know the answer, but thought I would check. I have a customer with a 500v2 at R11 and looking to add an Avaya SBC (portwell appliance version) for connecting remote J179s and IX Workplace users. They want to use the SoftConsole app remotely, but do not allow at home workers VPN access today. Other than port forwarding is there another way to get SoftConsole to work reomtely with an at home user or is VPN the only option?
