Hi everybody!

I am currently finishing the layout of a 250-page research publication. My problem is that I am in Denmark and the book is being printed in Peru. I think that they are very experienced at the printing house down there but they have so far been unable to open my pmd files. We are both using PageMaker 7.0. I use the Save As command and choose Files Required for Remote Printing.
When they try to open it down there it says something like "file incomplete".

A question: should the illustrations that are included preferably be located in the same folder as the pmd file?

Another question: They don't necessarily have to make any modifications to the file, so I am thinking about sending them pdf versions. All the illustratios I have converted to CMYK - can you control that when exporting to pdf? On my monitor, the colors appear as RGB, but are they in fact cmyk?

I am really looking forward to some advice on this. Thanks a lot to anyone who takes the time to answer me. I really appreciate it.

Have a nice day,
Mikael

I am not too familar with v7 but v6.5 has a 'Save for Service Provider' option in the Utilities>Plug-Ins menu. This should be used when sending files to a printer. This utility will verify/preflight your document and ensure that everything is packaged. I am not sure why Adobe offered the option 'for remote printing' in the 'Save As...' dialog box. It is useless.

A properly generated PDF may also be used. You can define what color model (RGB or CMYK) is used in the Distiller preferences.

Also - if this file is being transferred by the internet (FTP), package everything in a Stuffit or Zip archive - - then transfer as a 'binary' file if given the option. Files are transferred online as either 'ASCII' or 'Binary'. If you define the wrong type, the file will become corrupt.
