We've got a couple of SCO 5.0.6 servers and on some of then are serial printers connected. We won't to share these using lpd.

i've installed it like it should be done according by SCO!
but when i put a printjob in the queue it stays there, and it wont't get printed

this is what i get.
# rlpstat remote_printer
local.servername: waiting for remote.servername to come up
req-id ...

the printers are all accepting and enabled.

I've got the feeling it is something stupid are just a deamon that aint running!

could you advise me how to get it printing?

thanks
Marco

On the remote SCO box have you enable remote printing ?
scoadmin->Printers->Printer Manager->System->Print Services
Both Local and Remote must be checked

Hope This Help
PH.

Yes, I have it already enabled!
I also have accept remote jobs enable for each printer

Have you populated the /etc/hosts.equiv files ?

Hope This Help
PH.

Yes, got it

this is what i've got sofar!

server mdtap:
/etc/hosts.equiv
localhost
mos root
mos lp

/etc/hosts.lpd
mos root
mos lp

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.0.0.30 mos mos.net.be
192.0.0.31 mdtap mdtap.net.nl

/.rhosts
mos root
mdtap root

client mos:
/etc/hosts.equiv
localhost
mdtap root
mdtap lp

/etc/hosts.lpd
mdtap root
mdtap lp

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.0.0.30 mos mos.net.be
192.0.0.31 mdtap mdtap.net.nl

/.rhosts
mos root
mdtap root

server side:
/etc/printcap
print1:lp=/dev/ttya10:rm=:rp=:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/print1:

client side:
/etc/printcap
print1:lp=:rm=mdtap.net.nl:rp=print1:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/print1:

Normally the local printer print1 on mdtap.net.nl don't have to be defined in /etc/printcap nor in the /usr/spool/lpd structure.

Hope This Help

Did you manually type these printcap lines?

normally the generated lines would look like

print1: :lp=:rm=mdtap.net.nl:rp=print1:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/print1:

or
print1::lp=:rm=mdtap.net.nl:rp=print1:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/print1:

ps -ef | grep lp
should show you /usr/lib/lpsched and /usr/lib/lpd
can you ping the FQDM mdtap.net.nl from mos?
also you could try putting the FQDM's in the host.lpd files.

once you have made any changes to either of these files you must restart both lp daemons.

in /usr/spool/lpd/print1 on mos you should see at least 3 files:
-rw-r----x 1 root daemon 4 Aug 27 11:53 .seq
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38 Aug 27 11:54 lock
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root sys 25 Aug 27 11:54 status

hth

I don't think i understand FQDM ?

please explain
