Are there an abundance of remote mapping opportunities? How do you get the resources of remote mapping? eg. clients

Remote Mapping as a career has potential. However, since most maps are tied to a particular software package (if it's not homegrown), you'd really have to have a diversified set of 'package' skills.

Some of the larger EDI/EC software providers actually contract out to "remote mappers". Basically work in your area (either on site or remote connect to THEIR clients).

Sterling, which manufactures the GENTRAN suite of products is big on that. So if you have experience mapping in Gentran (Unix or NT Server are probably the key platforms) then give them a ring.

I have been doing remote mapping for about a year now. My firm works hard to ensure that this is an option for their consultants when talking to a client. The only issue is having a local copy of the translation software on your computer to write the maps. If the consulting firm does not have a license for the software, this could get difficult. This would require you to work on the client's system via dialup and install the server version on your computer. This is really slow in most cases.
