How many remote (off site) users can I successfully connect to a BCM 50? I have a customer who has two offices, and I would like to install a BCM 50 in one office, and connect 5 IP phones via DSL internet from the other office. Will the BCM 50 support this? Will the DSL service support this?

Thanks!

I do not believe DSL will support 5 users. Let pronei, Biv, or DB get a hold of this one.

What is the maximum number that a normal DSL link could reasonably support?

Depends on the speed.. A 256kbps DSL link should be able to handle a couple.. I would recommend a 768kbps link..

remember though, you cannot have the phones behind a router and expect the voice to work. I would recommend a VPN Router at each end to setup a VPN tunnel between locations. Once that is done, all should be good..

I am guessing that all remote IP phones will be in the same office? If not, and there are seperated by different networks, then you will need to build a VPN tunnel between all possible locations.

DB..

VPN will be used, and at least 1 Meg speed on both ends. Do you think that 5 sets is too many? It has been suggested to use two BCMs...one on each end.

The number of calls a DSL connection can support depends on the bandsidth of the link and the CODEC used on the IP sets.

G7.11 CODEC will use about 84Kbp/s per call
G.729 CODEC will use about 24Kbp/s per call

Use a VPN router at the remote site is a good idea, because the Nortel VPN router will support QoS fo rthe voice traffic.

You have to check with your ISP to see if they will provide QoS on the DSL link. (most likely not, you have to pay a premium to have QoS).

The BCM50 support 5 site-to-site tunnels.

Hope this helps.
