We are going to be installing new IP office 500. Going with 9508's in office. Haven't received system so not sure build. It is going to require 1 remote phone. Have static IP address in office, will be cable modem with DHCP address at remote site. But looking through threads, information on remote phones varies on threads I've read. From what I read it isn't just a case of opening ports on router on both sides.
So looking for recommendation (and confirmation of success installing) for 1 remote phone.
Which VPN Appliance you'd recommend in office.
Which Type of IP Phone.
Any other information you can provide. Pitfalls to avoid (Like maybe 9608's)
I apologize because realize this question is kind of vague but looking for assistance from the Gurus. Rather than start from scratch, hoping to get hardware identified first. From what I've seen 9608's aren't quite there yet.

H323 or VPN?
VPNrouter/gateway at main site? If yes, use 9620L. Use IPSec tunnelling

You'll need to write a custom 46XX settings file and 96XXVPN file.
RTM Remote IP handset Administrator Manual.
Search VPN on support.avaya.com. You'll find heaps of docs there. Get it working on your demo first.

Hold,
Not going to go too fast to trip myself up. Background is with Nortel BCM (Needed Hardware VPN) and Iwatsu (Just needed to forward ports on both sides). I've read through some documents and threads but right now have turned myself around and want to ask some basic questions.
1-For Main Site.I assume you'll need hardware VPN regardless. Nothing I've seen shows anything about port forwarding. Or is your question about H323 mean that you can set up a phone remotely without VPN?
2-For Remote Site. Will need either hardware VPN or Avaya IP phone that works decent for VPN. (9620, 9630, 9640 from what I've seen on other threads). We have a 9608. Of course it doesn't have VPN option. Saw on threads theres a way to downgrade to show VPN option but not going into that right now. Seems like everyone is hopeful they'll fix glitches with 9.0.

You mentioned H323 or VPN? In my terminology the phone would always be H323. But would connect through VPN tunnel remotely. Is that not correct?

So continuing reading. Could the phone be set up as remote worker? Is that what you mean by H.323? Looking at documentation for Essential Edition states
Remote Worker
• Up to four people can work from anywhere with just an Internet connection and an Avaya 9600 series IP Phone

So if it does what I read. I shouldn't need any VPN. Am I reading that correctly? I assume there would need to be some ports forwarded. Will keep reading.

why not just pop a semi decent little VPN router on the remote site behind the cable/DSL modem to run the H.323 phone anyhow, LAN to LAN then, gets round all the NAT wah wah that you've probably been reading about peeps having dramas with.
or just a VPN capable cable router/ modem? then PC/ remote network is covered for security to the head office too..
It'll be routed then via the VPN. just beware any QoS rules are a bit funny on entry level routers, as VPN considered a different interface to the default PPP interface maybe too? been bitten by that..

good luck getting port forwarding to work

its a nightmare

vpn is the way to go

use VPN, I spent way to much time trying the other way with NAT or PAT still could not work, I think it is the router that was giving me fits. Cisco locks down everything and it is a pain to work with some IT people.
