Remote IP Phone using Port Forwarding instead of VPN?

Is it possible to use port forwarding on my cisco router to connect IP phones to the system instead of setting up a permanent VPN connection?

If so which ports? 7000 probably and what else?

Also other than the obvious issue with security are there any performance issues when setting an IP phone up this way?
