I am trying to connect to my company's VPN network with IPsec ,PPTP using Nortell client software from home. It is working fine when I use PPTP but it is giving a message "Remote Host not Resonding " when I use IPSec. At home I had LinkSys router connected to cablemodem. In the company we have Snapgear(model:LITE +) VPN router connected to ADSL(asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).I appreciate if anybody can help me with solving this problem.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the quick response.
Let me Rephrase my question.

1. I have a Snapgear VPN Appliance.
2. It has builtin PPTP & IPSEC (Both) server.
3. My PPTP is working fine & my current question is related with IPSEC.
4. My pysical network i as as follows
4.1 The snapgear has built in DHCP server(192.169.0.1), it also acts as a router, switch. It is directly connected to A-DSL modem.
4.2 My computers are connected to the snapgear vpn-router.

5. I have setup the SnapGear IPSEC server as follows.
5.1 Enable IPSec: = true.
5.2 Specify which interface(s) IPSec is to be used on. Select Default route if you are using the SnapGear's default gateway as the interface for the IPSec tunnel to go out on. A maximum of 4 interfaces can be used.
So I have set up the Default route = true.

5.3 I have created a tunnel called as "abctunnel"
I am not using any RSA digital KEy
( I am using a Pre-Shared Secret - (recommended) )
5.4 we are using ESP Encryption
with password
--------------

On the client side I am Using Nortel Client with
abctunnel as user
& the Snapgear IP address as destination
& after submitting the password.

I am hoping that it will connect!

-----------------------------
Unfortuntly It is giving me the error as Remote Host not responding...
As if the IPsec server does not exists....

What to do?
Is it possible that the Ipsecserver itself is not working.
Or I am missing in the client configuration.

Hi matt,

Thanx for ur reply. The link u sent is useful.I found one problem when I see the dignostics of of my SnapGear It is always showing that

VPN:
PoPToP: Enabled ( 64.252.16.149)
(or disabled)

But it is not showing any info about IPSec whether it is enabled or disabled under that VPN heading even though i am enabling my IP Sec. I am thinking it might be one of the problem . How to find out whether Snapgear Ipsec server is running or not.

I have windows xp os and am able to log in to my office server that has windows server 2003 s.e. but i cant browse in it. It its connected but I cant not even see the computer when I do the search. the respond is always the same they cant find it. or if i try this \\server\share ...it cant find it either. please help me to solve my problem that it seems to be an automatic firewall or something that even after the server let me log in (which i can see when i go to the server)somehow the server don't let me browse nowhere

Angelminah,
You really ought to start a new thread. Anyways, have you run the command IPCONFIG from the command line while you are connected? Do this and see if you are receiving an IP for your network. And if you are, try and ping one of the other machines IP addresses and see what you get. Could be a DNS issue...

Thanks,

Matt Wray
