Remote Desktop won't work with Linksys BEFSR41

I tried Remote Desktop on my LAN with 2 XP Pro Machines and it worked fine. However when I am at home and bring the same laptop that I connected to my XP Pro at the office it cannot connect anymore.

The only difference is that the Office is Behind a Linksys BEFSR41 Router. I already did port forwarding on 3389 to forward to the IP address of my Office XP Pro. Even tried to put the Office XP Pro in the DMZ but no luck.

No firewalls are enabled, Remote Desktop on the SYSTEM is enabled and the username and password of the remote user is set.

Keep on getting this error.

"The Client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator."

Anyone with the same problem? Please help. Thanks!

I probably won't be the one who helps you find an answer... but some things to consider...

Is that IP address internet facing? Can you ping that IP and otherwise verify you're hitting your computer? Usually that work LAN is going to be in some way or another disconnected from the internet... or quite likely that Linksys router is a DHCP server which is really working as a NAT device, hence your office comp doesn't really have an external IP.

Are you using the Office public IP to connect? From your office go to:

Then you will see your public IP. Make sure you are using that IP from Remote Desktop Connection.

If that doesn't work...

First determine if you are even hitting the router. In the router enable remote administration. That is usually port 8080 by default. Then from home see if you can connect to the router:

(of course I made that public IP up and 888 isn't valid)

one other thing that wasn't mentioned...you will want to make sure that port forwarding is enabled in the router properties...unless you have that enabled, the remote login request would die at the router b/c it won't know what computer on the lan to send the request to...

Did you try by IP address?
Did you setup a new remote desktop connection?

Did everything mentioned.

1) Yes I can ping the External IP address
2) Already tried to setup a new connection
3) Port Forwarding works as I am using if for another remote control software (RA) but I want to use Remote Desktop as it is faster.

Still can't get it to work. I already tried every possible scenario. This is only XP Pro to XP Pro but with LINKSYS at both ends.

I do it all the time with Linksys's(??) at both ends. It should work barring some intermediate firewall/nat software. Could your office ISP be blocking some ports/services?

Just as something to add....open regedit (start > run > regedit) and check this key to make sure you have the correct port.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

A+,N+,CST,CNCT,MCP

Checked Regedit. It uses 3389. I also forwarded 3389 in my Linksys to the IP of the computer I am trying to remote. I even put the IP of that PC in the DMZ already (that means all ports open).

Don't think my ISP is blocking as I can use other software like Radmin ( to do remote control. It seems that only RDP can't work with my linksys.

I don't know where to look anymore. I am stomped. I have tried almost everything.

What firmware are you using on the linksys and do you have UPnP enabled on the routers and the pc's?

I have a very similar problem... getting the same error message with an attempt to connect/setup 2 XP Pro machines with remote terminal.

I am using the dLink DI-707 (7 port router).

It's getting a little frustating... already trying for one week. Are we to assume there is a bug in the XP software ?

Any other ideas ?

Got it to work. I reset the router and updated to latest firmware.

As for the Windows XP Pro config I just followed what everyone said on how to set it up. Make sure you have Upnp installed in XP Pro. Did this through control panel add remove windows components > Networking Services > Universal Plug and Play.
