Is it possible to copy the mstst.exe and mstsc.dll files into the system32 directory in Vista Basic?

Will it allow your Vista Basic system to behave as an RD Host? - no

Do it by upgrading Basic to a supported version such as Business or Ultimate. Any other methods out there (which involve hacks and reverse engineering) are sure to be in violation of Licensing Agreements and may also invalidate further troubleshooting support from Microsoft should you ever need it.

Using third party applications such as PC Anywhere might be an option that is legal and less of a minefield?

Does ultravnc have any problems running on vista as a service? I know that RealVNC does and you have to manually launch it after every reboot.

No... works without a hitch, even after restart...

PS: Tested on Vista Ultimate x64 ...
