Hi there.
My end users are complaining that when try to run the database program via remote desktop... only one person can launch it. The second one in gets an error message:
"t:\asdfaf\mydatabase.mdb - The parameter is incorrect."
Has anyone else run into this? Also, I've noticed that the system created a bunch of new databases - maybe temporary ones? - since they tried this test.
db1.mdb
db2.mdb
db3.mdb
What are these?

I'm not sure about the first problem.

As for the extra, unwanted database files do you have Compact on Close enabled? If so perhaps they're leftovers from that..? Have you opened the files to see what's in them?

Make sure your database is set to open in 'Shared' mode, not Exclusive.

The extra databases are from having the Compact On Close turned on. If they are opening a Front-End database with the tables residing on a Back-End, there's no reason to have this feature on since compacting doesn't do much to a database without tables.

Hi guys.
Got rid of the excess databases... thanks JoeAtWork.
The database is already set to be opened in shared mode.
... Haven't resolved having multiple people open the db. The only way it works is if I split the database.. which in turn makes the system run really slow. I have asked my users to continue to use the split model as i understand this is really the right thing to do.

But i really should be able to open it the other way too, right? It's bothering me that i don't know why it's giving me this error for just the one db.
i spoke with my RDP admin person and they were adamant that nothing is wrong with the RDP configuration or the network.

any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes, you should be able to open the database if it is unsplit.

It is however advisable to split your database, especially in a multi-user. There are known issues with performance in Access in a split database. All of these issues are resolvable. You'll find advice here:

The way I have it here @ my place is that ever user has their own FE on theeir desktop

Though not a popular statement here at Tek-tips, I've got three databases, two in companies and one in a school, where up to 15 people access a database on a shared drive. Unsplit. No problems for going on 3 years. I guess it's just lucky, although Microsoft says that the Jet engine can handle it.

i googled the error message "The parameter is incorrect" and "remote desktop" and i got a lot of stuff returned... but I couldn't make heads or tails of it. but the general impression i got was that this seems to be a common error message with RDP.

until i can prove them wrong, it's an ms access issue.
sheesh.
